OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the first day of competition at the MWC Championships in third and fourth place respectively. The men trail BYU (122) and Wyoming (109) after finishing the day with 107 points. The women trail BYU (108), New Mexico (90) and Wyoming (89) after tallying 87 points after the first day.
Sophomore Alison McInturff set a Utah school record of 1:48.98, which is an NCAA 'B' cut and World USA Swimming World Championship trials qualifying time, on the first leg of the women's 800 freestyle, helping Utah claimed its second title in three years in the the event. Loren Sweny, Marta Stepanczuk and Rachael Curci were the other members of the championship team, finishing with a final time of 7:25.34. The men finished fifth in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:47.12.
Both teams finished fourth in the 200 medley relay. The women posted of time of 1:45.15, with Leah Jensen, Ariane Kich, Michelle Blair and Amy Barefield competing for the Utes. The men finished with a time of 1:30.06, with Andrew Cole, Evan Castro, Cody Rempfer and Jonathan Larsen competing on the squad.
In the 1-meter diving competitions, junior Sterling Richards finished second, behind BYU's Scott Randall, with 308.30 points. Sophomore Andrew Jones finished fifth after tallying 279.40 points. Sophomore Kelsey Patterson placed second behind New Mexico's Becca Barras. Patterson finished with 270.40 points, while Barras scored a 283.30 to claim her third consecutive title in the 1-meter event.
"Both of our teams are in excellent shape going into tomorrow," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "This is the toughest day for us, and we got through it in fine form. Although we are in third and fourth, we are in a great place to turn on the gas and make a run at the title."
