OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Utah swimming and diving teams completed the second day of the MWC Championships, with the women moving ahead one spot to third place, while the men fell to fourth place. The women have a total of 224 points, while the men have tallied 180 points.
For the Utes, Kelsey Patterson set a new Utah school record, and a MWC all-time record in the 3-meter diving event, claiming her first MWC title in the event. Patterson totaled 524.80 points in the finals to edge Becca Barras of New Mexico.
Marta Stepanczuk set a Utah school record of 4:52.86 in the 500 free, finishing second behind BYU's Brittany Davis. Stepanczuk's time also is an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Jamie Trapp also set a Utah school record of 2:05.82 in the 200 IM, finishing third in the event.
For the men, senior Cody Rempfer claimed the 200 IM MWC title with a time of 1:49.71, beating out UNLV's Michael Day, who finished with a time of 1:49.83, both times NCAA provisionally qualifying times. In the 50 free, junior Jonathan Larsen also provisionally qualified for the NCAAs after finishing third in the event with a time of 20.12.
The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships continue thru Saturday.
