Utes Pound Out 15 Hits, Three Homers in Nightcap Win

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- After being held to just two runs and six hits in the first game of Tuesday's twinbill at Southern Utah, the University of Utah pounded out 15 hits and three home runs en route to a 14-6 win in the nightcap.
Utah held a 3-1 advantage after two innings. But the floodgates opened in the third and fourth frames. Trevor Eastman got the fireworks started with a one-out, solo home run to center field. Mike Tummolo then walked and John Welsh was hit by a pitch. Ryan Khoury then launched his first home run of the season to left field. The three-run shot put the Utes on top 7-1. Southern Utah put two runs up in the bottom of the inning, pulling within four runs, 7-3.
But Utah put another four-spot on the board in the top of the fourth. Clayne Garrett got the inning started with a two-out solo homer. Eastman, who had walked, came around on an SUU error to give the Utes a 9-3 lead. Welsh then ripped a two-run double to left-center, pushing across Mike Tummolo, who had reached on another Thunderbird error. After four innings, Utah led 11-3 and the rout was on.
The Utes scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 13-3 advantage. Southern Utah (7-5) got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth, making it 13-6. But it wasn't enough. Utah tacked on one more in the top of the eighth, en route to the eight-run victory.
Utah (4-8) was paced at the plate by Eastman, who was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Khoury was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jay Brossman went 3-for-6 with two runs batted-in and one run scored.
The Utes will be back in action again next Tuesday (March 8), hosting Albertson College in a twinbill at Ute Field.
