Utah Baseball Drops 4-2 Decision at UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to North Carolina-Wilmington Friday evening at Brooks Field. UNC-Wilmington scored four runs in the first three innings and made them stand up, taking the two-run victory in the first of a three-game set.
The Seahawks scored a single run in the bottom of the first off of Utah starter Jason Price. Chris Hatcher led off with a double for UNC-Wilmington (8-10) and later scored on Tim Preston's RBI single to right field. The Seahawks lead increased to 3-0 in the second inning when Hatcher delivered a two-run triple down the right-field line.
UNC-Wilmington pushed its edge to four runs in the third. Preston led off with a single and later scored on a groudnout. That's all the Seahawks would get off Price and Ute reliever Brian Lane. But it would be all they would need.
Utah (6-9) advanced only one runner past second base in the first five innings against Seahawk starter Ronald Hill. The Utes finally broke through in the sixth. Jay Brossman was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a Doug Beck single. Two outs later, Trevor Eastman ripped a double down the right-field line to plate Brossman and Beck and cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
Eastman's double knocked Hill (2-3) out of the contest. UNC-Wilmington reliever Allen Flood came on in relief and picked up the final out of the inning, preserving the Seahawks' two-run advantage. Flood only allowed one base runner over the next three innings and did not allow a hit to pick up the save, his first of the season.
Price (1-3) took the loss, going 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs. Eastman and Beck were the only Utes with hits, tallying two apiece. Eastman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Beck was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Game two of the series is slated for Saturday at 4 p.m.
