SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior Marta Stepanczuk qualified for the NCAA Women's Championships in the 1650 freestyle and 500 freestyle events. The NCAA Championships will be held at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and will take place March 17-19.
Stepanczuk helped the Utes to a third place finish at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Championships. Utah finished with 607 points, 108 points more than at the 2004 MWC Championships. Overall, the Utes set nine new school records at the MWC Championships, three of which are now held by Stepanczuk.
The senior won the 1650 free while setting a new MWC record and a Utah school record in the event with a time of 16 minutes, 32.83 seconds. Stepanczuk set a new school record in the 1000 free, on her way to winning the 1650 free, of nine minutes, 57.40 seconds. The Bialystok, Poland native finished second in the 500 free at the conference championships, setting a new school record in the event (4:51.79).
Sophomore Kelsey Patterson claimed the 3-meter MWC title, setting a new Utah and MWC record with a score of 524.80. Patterson finished second in the 1-meter event. Freshman Michelle Blair set a new school record and MWC record in the 200 butterfly preliminary heat with a time of two minutes, 02.09 seconds. Blair won the 200 fly MWC title with a time of two minutes, 02.83 seconds.
Alison McInturff won the MWC titles in both the 200 and 100 free events. The sophomore set a new school record in the 200 free of one minute, 48.42 seconds. McInturff finished the 100 free with a time of 50.86 seconds.
Senior Jamie Trapp set a new school record in the 100 backstroke preliminary heat with a time of 57.07 seconds, finishing fifth overall in the event with a time of 57.62 seconds. Sophomore Marissa Martin set a Utah school record in the 200 back with a time of two minutes, 00.52 seconds. Martin finished third overall in the 200 back.
