ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - For the second consecutive day, the University of Utah baseball team got a stellar pitching performance against New Mexico at Isotopes Park. Matt Crockett tossed the first complete game for the Utes this season, leading Utah to an 8-4 victory over the Lobos.
Utah (16-24, 8-12) trailed 2-1 after two innings. But a five-run fourth inning would provide all the offense Crockett would need. The Utes got a leadoff single from right fielder Joe Mozeleski to start things off in the fifth. Mozeleski later scored on an RBI single from catcher Adam Frank, tying the contest at 2-2.
With the bases loaded, shortstop Ryan Khoury gave the Utes a 3-2 lead, drawing an RBI walk. Third baseman Jay Brossman later ripped a two-run single up the middle, putting Utah on top 5-2. Second baseman Doug Beck's double into the left-center gap pushed Brossman in to give the Utes a 6-2 advantage.
New Mexico (19-25, 9-11) picked up two runs in the sixth on a Chris Carlson solo home run and an RBI triple off the bat of Ian Hollick. The Lobos pulled back within two runs at 6-4. But that's as close as they would get against Crockett (4-7). The junior hurler retired the last 10 New Mexico batters he faced. Crockett scattered four hits, allowing four runs - only two earned. He struck out nine and allowed just one walk.
Utah tallied insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Frank led off the seventh with a single and later scored on an RBI single from John Welsh. In the eighth, Eastman drove Beck in with a run-scoring single to make it 8-4.
The Utes scored once in the first, when Khoury singled and later scored when Brossman doubled and the ball was misplayed in the outfield. New Mexico took a 2-1 advantage, its only lead of the game, when Chris Dabbs hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.
Utah rapped out 17 hits, en route to the victory. Nine of those hits were tallied by Frank and Brossman. Frank notched a career-high five hits in the contest, going 5-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brossman was 4-for-6 and drove in a pair of runs.
Danny Ray Herrera (5-4) took the loss for New Mexico. He allowed six runs on 11 hits in five innings.
The Utes and Lobos wrap up their three-game set, with Utah looking for the sweep, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
