No. 5 Seed Utah to Host MWC Tournament
The University of Utah baseball team will play host to the Mountain West Conference Championship Tournament this week at Franklin Covey Field.
Play begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the No. 3-seeded San Diego State Aztecs vs. No. 6 Air Force. Utah will enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and face No. 4 New Mexico at 3 p.m.
The Utes enter this week's MWC Tournament with a record of 18-34. Utah finished the season with a 10-20 mark in MWC action. The Utes are coming off three consecutive losses at the hands of top-seeded UNLV last weekend.
This will mark the first time Utah has hosted the Moutain West Conference tournament in the brief history of the league.
Utah-MWC Tournament Balls & Strikes
? Wednesday's matchup with New Mexico will likely be the rubber match of the season series. The Lobos swept Utah at Franklin Covey Field earlier this year, while the Utes took all three at Isotopes Park.
? Wednesday will mark the 112th diamond meeting between New Mexico and Utah.
? Utah is 1-4 all-time in first-round games at the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Utes only MWC Tournament first-round victory came last year, a 10-4 win over BYU.
? Utah and New Mexico have met in the first round of the MWC Tournament once prior. The Lobos took a 7-4 win in 2001.
? Utah and New Mexico have a series record of 2-2 in MWC Tournament games.
The Price Is Right
In just his third season, junior lefty Jason Price has already tied the Utah career record for strikeouts. Price's strikeout of UNLV's C.J. Lang in the second inning of Friday's game with the Rebels was his 227th and tied the career mark.
The career record for strikeouts is currently held by Price and Lance Ericksen, who pitched for the Utes from 1995-99. Price already owns the single-season strikeout record with 102 last season. This season, he leads the team with 75.
Price is likely to start at least one game in the MWC Tournament. If he does, he will also set a new Utah record for starts in a season. His next start will be his 18th.
Appearances Aplenty
Another Utah pitcher about to break a school record is reliever Brian Lane. The junior right-hander tied the single-season record for appearances Saturday, when he tossed the ninth inning against UNLV.
Lane's appearance against the Rebels was his 30th of the season, tying the record set by Clay Westmoreland last year.
Lane is the team leader in ERA with a 4.01 mark. He also leads the team in victories with five. Lane is tied for the team lead in saves with three.
