Scouting the Opposition
Utah Valley State is currently 14-32. The Wolverines are in their second season of NCAA Division I competition. UVSC is led at the plate by Eli Slesk, who is batting .393. Dan Bulow leads the squad with 14 home runs.
San Diego State enters this weekend three games in front of Utah for third place in the MWC. SDSU is paced by Quintin Berry, who is hitting .415. Bruce Billings is the top pitcher, with a 5-3 record and 3.53 ERA.
Beck Shares MWC Player of Week Honors
Utah second baseman Doug Beck had the makings of a nice week going through Saturday. Then Sunday rolled around and the senior from Denver capped his week off in style.
Beck hit for the cycle on Sunday against New Mexico, going 6-for-7 with nine RBIs. For the week, he batted .579 and compiled a slugging percentage of 1.000.
For his efforts, Beck was named MWC Co-Player of the Week. He shared the honor with BYU's Brandon Taylor.
Completely Crockett
Senior pitcher Matt Crockett turned in Utah's first complete game of the season in Saturday's 8-4 win over New Mexico.
Crockett's complete game was somewhat unexpected. He had only gone seven innings once all season. In his two previous outings, Crockett lasted 2.2 innings against UNLV (8 runs allowed) and 4.0 innings against BYU (6 runs allowed).
Break Out the Brooms
With its sweep of New Mexico last weekend, Utah swept an MWC series from a school other than Air Force for the first time in more than five years.
The last time the Utes swept a league opponent other than the Falcons was March 17-19, 2000, in a sweep of UNLV.
Utah hadn't swept any opponent other than AFA since February of 2003. That sweep was over Cal State-Northridge.
