SALT LAKE CITY - Eight home meets are on tap for the 2005-06 season as the University of Utah's swimming and diving team eyes defense of its Mountain West Conference titles.
"I am excited to get the 2005-06 season underway," said head coach Michael Litzinger. "Our schedule is diverse, and points us toward success in February at the MWC Championship Meet."
The year begins with three straight home dates. The Don Reddish Relays launches the season on Friday, Oct. 14. That is followed by a meet with Villanova on Saturday, Nov. 15 and the Ute Senior Meet on Friday, Oct. 21.
Mountain West Conference action begins on Friday, Nov. 11 when San Diego State comes to town. UNLV invades Ute Natatorium the following evening.
The Utes return from their holiday training camp in Sarasota, Fla., in January to host their final three home meets of the year. MWC rivals New Mexico (Jan. 13), newcomer TCU (Nov. 14) and Colorado State (Jan. 21) round out the home portion of the schedule.
Road dates this season include meets at UC San Diego (Oct. 29), at Denver (Nov. 3-4), at Notre Dame (Dec.1-3), at Wyoming (Jan. 27), at Air Force (Jan. 28) and at Brigham Young (Feb. 2).
The team also selected its captains for the year. Amy Barefield, Meghan Demchuk, and Kendall Smith have been elected women's team captains while Eric Jorgensen, Jonathan Larsen, and David Maasberg are men's captains.
The women's team had a banner year in 2004-05, going undefeated in the dual-meet season at 9-0 overall, 7-0 MWC. The Utes claimed the MWC regular-season title for the second straight year, and the programs first-ever outright title after finishing tied with Colorado State in the previous season.
The men's team went 4-2 last year and 3-1 in MWC meets. Utah defeated Wyoming, Air Force and Brigham Young with its only loss at UNLV. The men earned a share of the MWC regular season title by defeating BYU at home in both teams' final dual meet of the season. The title marked Utah's first since 1995.
