SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah volleyball team got the 2005 season off to a good start when it handed head coach Beth Launiere a 3-0 win and her 300th career victory in the season opener against Idaho State tonight.
"It's a nice accomplishment," said the veteran head coach of her 300th victory. "It's nice to reach milestones like that but it also says a lot about our program and where it's at right now!"
Game scores were 30-22, 30-27 and 30-28. The Utes improve to 1-0 for the year while ISU slips to 0-1.
Three freshmen started for the Utes and made a sparkling debut. Airial Salvo hit .484 in chalking up 15 kills and no errors on 31 attempts. She had a double-double with 11 digs as well. Newcomer Lori Baird had 12 kills in hitting .417.
"I think things were a little shakey out there tonight," remarked Launiere. "We are not a well-oiled machine and it's obvious that we still have to pull things together. But, the talent is there and a lot of good things happened tonight."
The team outhit its rivals tonight, .316-.126, and outblocked it, 11.5-4.0.
Freshman Shannon Krug set the attack in racking up 43 assists and Kate Robison led the defense with 12 digs.
Baird and Krug each led the way with five blocks each.
Nikki Havens led the way for the visiting Bengals. She had 19 kills on the evening. Amanda Bevens had a team-best 29 assists while Felice Yocopis had a game-high 16 digs.
The Utes return to action on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when they host Weber State on Crimson Court.Match time is set for 7 p.m.
