SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Unviersity of Utah rebounded from a slow start to edge Missouri State in the Results Advertising Missouri State Classic here this evening, 3-1.
Game scores were 25-30, 30-24, 30-22 and 30-26. Utah improves to 5-3 while Missouri State falls to 4-5.
"We did a good job in the second match today," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We played our best match of the season tonight and we came away with a good win.
"I think our team came together this weekend. We played three good teams and we showed up and fought each one. This was very good experience for such a young team."
Freshman standout Airial Salvo won tournament MVP honors. Teammates Emillie Toone and Lori Baird also won all-tourney acclaim.
Utah wins the tournament as it went 2-1 in beating Iowa State, 3-1, and falling to Arkansas, 3-2.
Utah hit .231 for the match against MSU as it saw four of its athletes rack up double-digit kills. Leading the way was senior Shelly Sommerfeldt with 16. Also helping out were Airial Salvo (15 kills), Lori Baird (11) and Kate Robison (10). Salvo and Kathryn Lovell led the team in hitting. They both hit a match-best .333.
Sommerfeldt, Baird, Salvo and Robison all had double-doubles on the evening. Along with double-digit kills, Sommerfeldt and Robison had 16 digs and Baird helped out with 15.
Shannon Krug tallied 47 assists in running the attack.
The Utes' defense figured heavily as it held MSU to .101 hitting for the match. The Bears never hit better than .163 after hitting .250 in the first game. Utah held the edge at the net, 14-12, led by 6-7 Emillie Toone and her match-best 10 total blocks (nine assisted). Danielle Leichliter chipped in on defense with 13 digs.
Missouri State athletes led all players in the kills, assists and digs statistics. Katy Werges led with 21 kills, Ashley Warrren with 52 assists and Adeana McAfee with 21 digs. The Bears' leading blocker was Sarah Lansing and Sabrina O'Connor with six blocks apiece.
Utah returns to action on its home court this Thursday and Saturday, Sept 15 and 17. The Utes host Idaho and Santa Clara in the Hampton Inn Utah Classic. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
