SALT LAKE CITY - Swift hitting and an effective block led the No. 12-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (16-2 overall) to a 3-0 sweep over in-state rival UVSC here at Crimson Court tonight.
With the win, the Utes extend their winning streak to a school-record 14 matches and remain a perfect 8-0 on their home court. The win came on scores of 30-15, 30-25 and 30-22 as the Wolverines fall to 11-8 with the loss.
"We played well," said head coach Beth Launiere. "We also executed well but I was also impressed with how well UVSC played tonight. We executed at a very high level in game one and UVSC didn't give up. It fought hard and competed in games two and three."
The Utes came out hitting .302 (18-5-43) in game one and improved upon that in hitting .324 (15-4-34) in game two. The Utes settled in to hit .298 for the match as it's average dipped to .270 (17-7-37) in the final frame.
Pacing the offense was Airial Salvo with 13 kills on .310 (13-4-29) hitting. Whitney Webb had an impressive night too as she racked up 12 kills on an eye-popping .611 (12-1-18) hitting.
Webb was the stat-sheet stuffer tonight as she tallied nine blocks and seven digs in the three-game win.
Another offensive effort of note was Lori Baird as she hit an impressive .643 (9-0-14) and tallied five total blocks, two of which were block solos.
Sydney Anderson got the start and set the attack in game one. She finished with 12 assists. Shannon Krug set the attack in the final two games, tallying 27 for the night.
The block was nothing to overlook either as the Utes finished the match with 16 blocks. Webb and Chelsey Sandberg were the most effective at the net as the duo combined for eight of the team's 16 blocks. Webb's nine was complimented by Sandberg's eight blocks. Baird chimed in with five and Kate Robison had three.
Utah held the 16-5 edge in team blocks and held the Wolverines to a meager .066 (37-29-122) hitting percentage for the match.
Utah's back-row effort was led by Salvo and Connie Dangerfield. Both of them finished with 13 digs.
Pacing the visitors were Jessica Endres and Camie Manwill (11 kills each), Lacee Koelliker (28 assists) and Endres and Ashley Dallin (three total blocks). Manwill led all Wolverines with 13 digs.
The Utes return to action this Saturday when they play conference rival Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
