USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Airial Salvo's 18 kills led the No. 9-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (24-2, 15-0 Mountain West Conference) to its 22nd straight win as the Utes toppled Air Force here tonight, 3-0.
With the win, Utah chalks up its 15th victory in conference play. That is both a school and conference record for league wins in a season.
The Falcons fall to 3-23 overall, 0-15 in conference tilts. Game scores were 30-19, 30-17 and 30-22.
"I was extremely pleased with our defensive effort tonight," said head coach Beth Launiere. "We've been working hard on being disciplined and I felt that we were tonight. I also thought that that we went out there and executed well."
The Utes hit .241 for the night, led by Salvo's 18 kills. Lori Baird had 10 kills. Baird was the top hitter, netting her 10 kills on .471 (10-2-17) hitting. Kathryn Lovell hit well this evening too, bagging her nine kills on .412 (9-2-17) hitting.
The bulk of tonight's offense ran through Shannon Krug who handed out 26 assists. She also had five digs on the night. Freshman Sydney Anderson got the start at setter, handing out 13 assists in one game of work.
Air Force did hold the 6-5.5 edge in team blocks but Utah managed to hold the home team to just .040 hitting. Baird's five total blocks led the Ute defense. Baird saw help from Salvo at the net as she helped out with three total blocks of her own.
Connie Dangerfield led from the back row again, tallying a match-high 17 digs. Webb also helped out, bagging 10 digs of her own.
Leading the home team tonight were Katie Batchelder (11 kills), Kim Kallabis (15 assists and eight digs), Rebecca Gerton (eight digs) and Michelle Harrington (three blocks).
Utah returns to action tomorrow night for its regular season finale. It will battle Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., with first serve set for 7 p.m.
