WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Utah women's basketball team dropped a 60-57 decision to Georgetown Saturday afternoon at the McDonough Center in the nation's capital.
Georgetown (10-4) opened the game on a 7-0 run and led wire to wire in the contest. Utah (7-6) pulled within one point when Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) hit a three-pointer to make it 7-6. But that's as close as the Utes would get.
Utah stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the first half, but could never take the lead. Georgetown got 10 points from Kate Carlin off the bench in the first half, while Katrina Wheeler tallied eight in the first period for the Hoyas.
Utah pulled within four with just more than one minute remaining before halftime on a Joh-Teena Filipe (Soph., Salt Lake City) three-point play. But Carlin hit her second three-pointer of the first half just before the intermission to give Georgetown a 36-29 lead.
Carlin's triple extended into a 9-0 run when the Hoyas scored the first six points of the second half. That spurt gave Georgetown a 13-point edge, 42-29, its biggest lead of the contest. Filipe hit a three-pointer with 15 minutes remaining in the game to stop the Utah drought, trimming the Utes' deficit to 10, 42-32.
Midway through the second half, Utah still trailed by 10, 50-40. But a three-pointer by Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) and two straight layups from Filipe got Utah back within three in a span of just less than three minutes. Filipe's second score of that spurt came off a nice feed from Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) and made the score 50-47.
With 4:12 remaining, Aminata Diop scored for Georgetown to put the Hoyas up by seven, 56-49. Warner and Filipe then took over for the Utes. Warner hit her fourth three-pointer of the game. Filipe then scored under the bucket, followed by a runner in the lane from Warner. The duo combined for a 7-2 Utah spurt, pulling their squad within two points, 58-56, with just two minutes remaining.
But Diop scored under the basket again with less than one minute left to give Georgtown a four-point lead, 60-56. On the ensuing possession, the Utes caught a break. Whipple was fouled by the Hoyas' Carlin. The foul was deemed intentional, giving Utah two free throws and possession of the ball. Whipple converted one of the two charity tosses to pull the Utes within three. Utah inbounded the ball and got Warburton an open look at a long three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining. Her potential game-tying shot was just short.
Georgetown secured the rebound, successfully avoided being fouled and managed to run out the clock, icing the three-point victory. Katrina Wheeler led Georgetown with 16 points. Three other Hoyas were also in double figures. Warner scored a career-high 18 points off the bench for Utah. Filipe added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Utes, tallying her second career double-double.
The Utes are back in action Thursday, when they open Mountain West Conference play at home, hosting San Diego State. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.
