Launiere Named West Region Coach of the Year
SALT LAKE CITY - Five University of Utah volleyball players were honored by the AVCA this afternoon, garnering all-region accolades for their efforts.
Sydney Anderson led the way, winning the region's Freshman of the Year honor, while Airial Salvo, Emillie Toone and Whitney Webb were each named to the All-Region team. Lori Baird rounds out the award winners, bagging honorable mention all-region accolades.
The awards make Anderson eligible for the National Freshman of the Year while Salvo, Toone and Webb are candidates for All-America honors.
Anderson won West Region Freshman of the Year in setting Utah's offense this past season. The Utes hit .281 with her running the attack and she set three hitters who not only hit well above the team's average, but also landed All-West Region honors as well. Anderson finished the season handing out 12.45 assists and also averaged 2.77 digs and 0.76 blocks.
A sophomore, Salvo won the conference's Player of the Year award, and the outside finished the season hitting .288. She also turned in averages of 4.13 kills, 3.35 digs, 0.45 aces and 0.78 blocks.
A junior middle blocker, Toone ranked among the top blockers in the nation all season long. She finished the year recording blocks at 1.93 clip, which currently ranks second in the country. She also collected 2.43 kills on a team-best .369 hitting.
A pleasant surprise, Webb turned out to be a big offensive threat for the Utes this season. She averaged 3.13 kills, 2.67 digs and 1.29 blocks, all while hitting .344 (the second-best mark on the team). She finished the season with an impressive showing against No. 4 UCLA, tallying 17 kills, 18 digs, six assists and four blocks.
Lori Baird finished with honorable mention all-region honors. She was second on the team in blocks with 1.34 per game. Baird also had 2.44 kills per game on .333 hitting.
