SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team finished competition Saturday. The team split, with some women competing in the Iowa State Classic, others in the Albuquerque Invitational, and the rest of the team at the Bengal Shootout.
Kellie Anderson, Ashlee Warnick, and Chelsea DiGrazia competed in the 5000m Friday night, finishing within 30 seconds of each other and obtaining personal bests. Anderson finished 31st (17:52.48) and now holds the spot on Utah's all-time top-ten list for the 9th fastest time in the event. Warnick finished 43rd (18:12.00) with a personal best time by 58 seconds, and DiGrazia 47th (18:22.39).
"It was really an outstanding performance by these women," remarked Kepler of the 5000m runners. "They all ran great races, were very patient, and kept with the race plan very well. We are looking to build on that for the next race."
The women continued to perform well in the 3000m on Saturday, with Kellie Anderson bringing home another personal best time of 10:34.10 and 20th place. Ashlee Warnick was right behind her teammate, finishing 21st (10:35.58). Nicki Hugie finished 50th of 96 runners in the mile, with a personal best time of 5:07.99.
At the Albuquerque Invitational, AJ Roby and Vanessa Mortensen both competed in the weight throw and the shot put. Roby finished 7th in the weight throw (55-08.50) and 3rd in the shot put (44-07.00). Mortensen finished 5th in the weight throw (57-11.25) and 15th in the shot put (39-08.00).
"AJ and Vanessa had solid performances at the Lobo Invitational," remarked coach Kepler. "Most importantly they were able to compete in the same facility that the conference meet will be hosted in. That is especially important in the throwing events because rings and the backdrop in those events are so different from one venue to the next. When we return there in two weeks they will have a better idea of what to expect and how to approach those throwing areas."
Amanda Feigt led the team at the Bengal Shootout with a first-place finish in the long jump (18-10.5) and the triple jump (37-03.75). Feigt also competed in the 60m hurdles invitational (2nd, 8.86) and the 60m hurdles (7th, 9.17). Haley McAllister was right behind Feigt in the long jump, coming in at second place with 18-07.00. Jennifer Kaplar-Cutrer was another huge competitor for the Utes, competing in several events, including the 200m dash with a personal best time of 26:24, finishing 6th, and 60m hurdles invitational (5th, 8.96).
"We had another great meet at Pocatello," praises coach Kepler. "Our sprinters, horizontal jumpers, and hurdlers were outstanding. We will use next weeks' meet at Weber State as a tune-up meet for a few athletes before going to the Mountain West Conference Championships in two weeks."
The Utes will head to Ogden next week, for the Wildcat Tune-Up help Saturday, February 18th.
