COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah's Amber Walter and Sterling Richards have been named MWC Women's Swimmer and Men's Diver of the Week, respectively. Walter earned her third weekly award, while Richards picks up his sixth award this season and his ninth career weekly award.
Walter, a junior from a junior from Kalispell, Mont., won two individual events and one relay as Utah beat BYU, 128-115, to clinch the MWC regular-season title. Walter won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.19 and took home top honors in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.08. Her time in the 50 free was just .01 seconds off her best mark. In addition, she was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that captured the top spot in 3:29.00. Walter holds the top times in the MWC this season in the 50 free, 100 free and 100-yard breaststroke.
Richards, a senior from Salt Lake City, Utah, won both diving events in a dual meet against BYU. Richards set a new Utah school record in the 1-meter diving event after recording 388.95 points, breaking the record he set previously this year. His score in the 1-meter was 104.85 points more than the second- place finisher. In the 3-meter, Richards scored 358.58 points, 57 points more than second place. Richards holds the top times in the conference on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
The Utes are back in action Feb. 22-25 when they travel to Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in the MWC Championships.
