Sterling Richards Places Fifth At NCAA Championships

University of Utah senior Sterling Richards became the first Ute diver ever to earn first-team All-America status by placing fifth on the 1-meter board at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Ga., Thursday. He scored a 340.55 total for six dives at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center and his 74.8 second-dive score was the best of that round for the eight-man field and the third-best score of the night. Richards, a Woods Cross native (Woods Cross HS), received 14 points for his fifth-place finish, which was enough to put Utah in 19th place as a team.
Richards, a three-time Mountain West Conference champion on the 3-meter board, also qualified for the NCAA's on that event and will compete tomorrow in the preliminaries at 2 p.m. EST, with the finals taking place in the evening. Live scoring is available online at www.ncaa.org.
"It was really exciting for Sterling and for the University of Utah," said Utah swimming and diving coach Mike Litzinger. "He just did an outstanding job today."
