The University of Utah finished 26th at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships after Sterling Richards finished fifth on the 1-meter board on Mar. 23 and 10th on the 3-meter board on Mar. 24, earning 21 points for the Utes. Auburn won its fourth-straight title with 480.50 points.
Richards, a Wood Cross native, became the first Ute diver ever to earn first-team All-America status with his fifth-place finish on the 1-meter board on Thursday. He scored a 340.55 total for six dives at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center and his 74.8 second-dive score was the best of that round for the eight-man field and the third-best score of the night.
Richards, a three-time Mountain West Conference champion on the 3-meter and 2006 MWC Men's Diver of the Year, placed 10th on the 3-meter on Friday at the championship meet scoring 328.55 points, just missing the finals by two places and just 4.65 points.
