Event Titles Abound for Women's Track

PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah track and field team finished the weekend with two new event champions after a solid showing at the Robison Invitational in Provo, Utah, this afternoon.
Vanessa Mortonsen and Mandie Rowell claimed first-place finishes in their respective events on the campus of Brigham Young. Mortonsen was first with a 193-6 effort in the hammer throw while Rowell outdistanced everyone in the triple jump. She recorded a 37-5 leap in the event.
"Overall, I think our team had a solid showing this weekend," head coach Kyle Kepler remarked as he finished the afternoon with the split squad that competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Ia. "The weather here at the Drake relays today was a major issue for all competitors. It prevented a lot of people from turning in standout performances. But, I think that everyone here and in Provo did a good job for us this weekend.
"Now, it's time for the team take care of finals in the classroom and then we'll re-focus our efforts and concentrate on the conference championships."
While Mortonsen and Rowell stood out above everyone else, Utah had many other solid showings today.
AJ Roby had two strong efforts. She finished second in the discus with a toss of 144-7 and followed that up with a fourth-place effort in the hammer throw (161-3).
Sarah McFee also had a fourth-place mark. She trailed teammate Rowell in the triple jump with a 35-1/2 leap.
In the pole vault, Trisha Wagner nearly topped the 12-foot plateau. She turned in a vault of 11-11 ¾, good enough to take seventh in the event. Teammates Susan Atwater and Liddy Steele finished tied for 10th in the pole vault. They both recorded 11-5 ¾ efforts.
Candice Mannion turned in a pair of personal records at the Robison Invite. She finished sixth in both the 200m and 400m events. But, she turned a personal best 24.84 and 57.42 in the respective events.
The team did split up this weekend, with the other faction competing at the prestigious Drake Relays on the campus of Drake University.
Amanda Feigt qualified for the finals in the long jump, chalking up a top-10 finishe with a jump of 18-7.
