SALT LAKE CITY - Amanda Feigt and Vanessa Mortensen will represent the University of Utah track and field team at the NCAA Championship meet in Sacramento, Calif., this June 7-10.
Feigt automatically qualified at the NCAA Regional meet in Provo, Utah, last weekend while Mortensen won an at-large bid in the hammer throw.
Feigt qualified by taking third in the 400m hurdles last weekend. She clocked it in a personal-best 59.54. Mortensen's at-large bid came thanks to her record-setting hammer throw at the Mountain West Conference championships. She won the conference title and set both the school and Danish National record with a 205-0 toss.
"I'm excited for and proud of Vanessa and Amanda," remarked head coach Kyle Kepler. "For Vanessa, it's a return trip for her and a chance to win All-America honors.
"This is Amanda's first trip but she has NCAA experience with Utah's soccer team. It has been a goal of hers to go to the NCAA's in track and field. She was very close to qualifying for nationals in indoors and I am glad that she finally qualified for the outdoor meet.
"To have two national qualifiers with a first-year coaching staff is a testament to how hard it has worked this year," continued Kepler. "Burke Bockman and Tapio Kuusela have done an outstanding job with their athletes and I am very grateful for the hard work they have put into this program."
Mortensen qualified for the national championship meet in the hammer throw last season. She finished 25th (177-7) in the 2005 meet.
The top five in each event from each region automatically qualified for the national meet while at-large bids were dealt out to individuals who finished in the top 12. At-large bids were based on performances from throughout the entire outdoor season.
