OGDEN, Utah - The No. 21-ranked University of Utah volleyball team ran its winning streak to five matches after dispensing of in-state rival Weber State here tonight, 3-0. With the victory, Utah will enter conference play with a 7-2 overall record.
Game scores were 30-25, 30-12 and 30-18. WSU falls to 4-10 on the year and are losers of five straight now.
"We started slow but once we got going, we played well," said head coach Beth Launiere. "When our serve and block are doing well, we can run up points in a hurry and that's what we did tonight.
"We struggled serving last weekend and that's something we worked on in our last practices. Our serving started out slow but overall, I thought we did well with it this evening."
After spotting Weber State a potentially comfortable 7-2 lead in game one, the Utes battled tirelessly to tie it, 19-19. They finally took their first lead of the match on the next point, thanks to an Emillie Toone-Airial Salvo block at the far antennae.
After the sluggish start, the Utes cruised to wins in games two and three. Utah hit .333 in game two to score the 18-point win, and hit .410 in the game three victory.
Leading the Utes' attack was Kate Robison and her 14 kills. The only other Ute with double-digit kills was Salvo with 12.
"Kate Robison came off the bench and led us in attacking," said Launiere. "To have a performance like that come off the bench is so valuable to this team."
Sydney Anderson engineered the offense in the first two games. During her time, the team hit .253. Anderson dealt out 19 assists and added three kills and six digs to the effort. Shannon Krug came in to set the third game. Utah hit .410 under her guidance as she tallied 18 assists. Utah hit .307 for the night.
The block was up to par again as Utah held a commanding 15-4 lead in team blocks. Toone's seven blocks led the way but Whitney Webb (six total blocks) and Lori Baird (four) also helped stymie a Weber State offense that hit a meager .051 on the night.
Webb tallied a team-high 13 digs tonight.
Leading Weber State was Leah Burmeister (nine kills), Kristi Lindlay (23 assists), Keelee Kap (18 digs) while three Wildcat spikers had two total blocks on the night.
The Utes return to action this weekend when they host the conference opener with Colorado State. First serve on Friday, Sept. 15, is set for 7 p.m. The CSU match will also air on CSTV as its Match of the Week. The match will air on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. (MDT).
Notes: All seven of Utah's wins this year have been 3-0 sweeps ... Airial Salvo returned to form with a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. It's her sixth double-double this year ... Kate Robison's 14 kills and three blocks were career highs ... Whitney Webb had a career-high 13 digs... Lori Baird has tallied only one hitting error in her last 32 swings. She has 20 kills during that span ... Utah has hit better than .300 in three of the last four matches. It hit .307 tonight ... the four Weber State team blocks is the lowest opponent total this year.
