THIS WEEK:
The Utah women's swimming and diving team will hit the road for two conference meets. First on Thursday, January 18, the team will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State. The meet with the Rams will begin at 5:00 p.m. The Utes will then head to Albuquerque, N.M., for a meet with New Mexico. Start time against the Lobos will be at noon.
UTE NOTES:
The Utah women are 5-0 overall, and 3-0 in Mountain West Conference competition. Last week Utah beat TCU on the road by a score of 178-121. Utah was helped by strong performances by Amber Walter and Kelsey Patterson. Walter won the 200-medley relay (1:46.44), 50 free (23.34), 100 free (52.16) and the 200-free relay (1:35.69). Patterson won both boards, beating TCU's Jennifer Ferguson in the one-meter diving and three-meter diving. Ferguson is the four-time Diver of the Week in the MWC this season. Patterson scored a 303.08 in the three-meter diving and a 282.30 in the one-meter diving.
Utah's Amber Walter swam the fourth fastest time in the nation and top time in the conference in the 50 free (22.59).
Last season Utah beat both New Mexico and Colorado State as part of the Utes perfect 8-0 conference season. The Lobos fell 129-107, while Utah beat the Rams 158-127.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
The Colorado State meet will be a match-up of the top two teams in the MWC, when they battle the Utes. The Rams come into the meet with a perfect 4-0 record in the conference and sit atop the standings. They will also be looking for redemption from a loss suffered last season at the hands of Utah. The Rams boast a very strong team in the medley relay, along with the backstroke and butterfly events.
New Mexico sits 2-2 in MWC competition and will host Utah on Saturday. The Lobos hope to ride the momentum of its traditionally strong middle distance events to challenge Utah. The Lobos will also be looking to make a statement in the conference race with a strong performance against the Utes.
