THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams return home to host conference opponents Wyoming and Air Force. The Utes will host the Cowboys on Friday, January 26, at 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, January 27, Utah will play host to the Falcons, with a start time of 1:00 p.m. Both meets will be held at the Ute Natatorium.
UTE NOTES:
Utah's women improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference competition with victories over Colorado State and New Mexico. The Utes sit atop the conference standings with Wyoming right on their heels at 4-0 in MWC competition. In the last meeting, the Ute women beat both Wyoming (133-90) and Air Force (167-123). Utah is also the defending Women's MWC Champions.
The last conference loss for the Ute women came on January 30, 2004, at Brigham Young. Since that meet the Utes have won 20 consecutive conference meets and have a record of 26-1 in conference competition over the past four seasons.
Utah's Amber Walter swam the fourth fastest time in the nation and top time in the conference in the 50 free (22.59).
The Utah men are 3-5 overall and 0-2 in MWC competition. The men had the week off last week and look to improve on their standing heading into the last two weekends of competition before the MWC Championships. In the last meeting with Wyoming the Utes won a very close meet 114-110, while Air Force beat Utah 154.5-145.5.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
Wyoming: The Cowgirls are unbeaten in the MWC this season and are off to their best start ever at 6-0 (4-0 in MWC competition. They boast a very strong distance team and have improved the sprint events as well. On the men's side; the Cowboys dropped a heartbreaker to defending conference champion UNLV last weekend. Wyoming led going into the final two events but fell to the Rebels. The men sit at 0-2 in MWC competition heading into Friday's meet. Both Wyoming teams are very strong on the diving front.
Air Force: The men's team is the only unbeaten team in the conference at 2-0 in MWC competition. The Falcons look to be the favorites heading into the MWC Championships and are very deep in almost every event. Falcon, Chris Knaute is the reigning MWC Swimmer of the Year and an honorable mention All-American. The women's team is 0-5 in conference competition this season.
QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH Michael Litzinger:
"With Wyoming we expect a very competitive meet. They are coming off a very strong performance against UNLV, where the women won and the men almost beat the defending conference champions. We expect everything they have on Friday. Wyoming is probably the most improved team in the conference this year."
"Air Force will be a very tough opponent on the men's side. They go three-deep in almost every event and Chris Knaute can swim almost every event well. We will just have to swim around Knaute and do the best we can against them."
