THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host in-state rival Brigham Young University on Friday, February 2, at 6:00 p.m. The women's meet will match the top two teams in the conference, and both come into Friday unbeaten. On the men's side Utah will look to continue its two meet winning streak coming off an upset win over Air Force and a victory against Wyoming.
UTE NOTES:
Utah's women are 9-0 overall and 7-0 in conference competition. The Utes sit atop the conference standings tied with BYU. Last season the Ute women beat the Cougars 128-115 to clinch the regular season conference title. The Utes would also go on the win the conference championships three weeks later with 679.5 points.
The last conference loss for the Ute women came on January 30, 2004, at Brigham Young. Since that meet the Utes have won 22 consecutive conference meets and have a record of 28-1 in conference competition over the past four seasons. Utah's Amber Walter swam the fourth fastest time in the nation and top time in the conference in the 50 free (22.59).
The Utah men are sitting at .500 with a 5-5 overall record and 2-2 in MWC competition. The men got their first conference win last Friday when they beat Wyoming 137-103. Following the win against the Cowboys, Utah upset Air Force 154-146, in a meet that went down to the final event when the Utes pulled it out. In the last meeting with the Cougars, Utah fell 134-109 in Provo.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
The BYU women are unbeaten in the conference and will be looking for revenge for the last two meetings, which the Utes have won. The winner of this meet will be the regular season conference champion. The key events to watch against the Cougars will be the freestyle events where both teams are very strong. Also the relay events should be closely contested. One other thing to watch for is the diving between Utah's Kelsey Patterson and BYU's Tawni Jones.
The Cougar men are 3-1 in the conference and sit second in the conference. BYU has one of the strongest sprint teams in the conference and will be very tough to beat in those events. The Utes will hope to take advantage of a slight edge in distance, breast and back events. Utah will try to ride the momentum of the home crowd and the wins last week to stay with the Cougars.
