SALT LAKE CITY - Utah begins its second go round of Mountain West Conference play this week as it takes on No. 21 Colorado State for the second time this season. The Utes defeated the Rams 3-1 in their first meeting this season.
The Week In Review
Whitney Webb tallied a career-high 22 points as Utah lost a hard-nosed five-game match, 3-2 against rival Brigham Young on Friday, Oct. 12 on Crimson Court.
Down 2-1 in the match, the Utes rallied to win game four, 30-26, before falling in the fifth game, 15-7.
The match marked the inaugural Deseret First Duel contest, a rivalry series between Utah and BYU.
Karolina Bartkowiak also had a career-high in kills, with 15 on .440 hitting. Lori Baird tallied 11 kills on .400 hitting. Connie Dangerfield led the team with 14 digs on the night.
Scouting Colorado State
Colorado State is 13-4 on the year, 7-1 in the MWC. The Rams only loss of the MWC campaign thus far was a 3-1 defeat by the Utes back on Sept. 21. Since then the team has won its last six matches.
Mekana Barnes, who set a MWC blocking record against the Utes, is averaging 3.85 kpg, has 18 aces, 1.84 bpg and is hitting .409.
Jamie Strauss leads the Rams with 4.20 kills per game. Libero Katelin Batten has 4.32 digs per game and 13 aces. Ashley Fornstrom serves as the setter, recording 13.63 assists per game.
Tom Hilbert is in his 12th season as head coach at Colorado State. He has a record of 274-68 with the Rams.
Colorado State leads the all-time series against Utah, 45-21.
Against the Best
Colorado State is the sixth team this season that Utah has played in the top 25 of the AVCA poll. Utah defeated No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and played competitive matches against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Florida and No. 22 New Mexico State, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah. UNLV has received votes in the poll and BYU has also been ranked this season.
Holding Opponents
Utah leads the MWC in opponent hitting percentage. The Utes are holding opponents to just a .162 hitting percentage. Utah has twice held opponents below .100, holding Dayton (8/31) to .080 and Air Force (9/28) to .008.
Recent Surges
Senior Whitney Webb has led Utah in its last four games with 3.88 kills per game and a .245 hitting percentage. She also tallied 14 blocks. Webb recorded a team-best 19 kills vs. TCU and had a career-high 22 kills vs. BYU.
Sophomore Chelsey Sandberg recorded 1.47 kills per game, tallying a career-best 10 kills and .562 hitting percentage vs. New Mexico.
Middle (Wo)man
Senior Lori Baird has led the Utes in conference play, averaging 1.50 blocks per game in MWC play, which ranks third in the conference. She has also recorded 3.06 kills per game with a .300 hitting percentage. Her .300 percentage ranks 9th in the conference in MWC games.
