SALT LAKE CITY - Utah begins the week in Orem against Utah Valley University on Tuesday, Oct. 23 before returning home for Mountain West Conference action against Wyoming (Oct. 26) and Air Force (Oct. 27).
The Week In Review
Kathryn Haynie tallied 18 kills as the Utah volleyball team fell to No. 21 Colorado State, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Fort Collins.
Whitney Webb recorded 15 kills while Karolina Bartkowiak had 10 kills and six blocks. Kate Robison tallied eight kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Utah played hard in the four-game match, winning game two, 30-28. The Utes also played close games throughout, holding a lead and creating numerous ties in games one and two.
Scouting Utah Valley
In-state rival Utah Valley, a Divsion I independent, is 16-6 on the year. The team is 11-1 in its last 12 matches, falling only to BYU, 3-0 on Oct. 9, in that span.
Camie Manwill leads the Wolverines with 3.99 kills per game. She is also averaging 4.03 digs per game. Jessica Endres is the team's top blocker with 1.20 blocks per game. She also has 3.93 kills per game.
Kristin Lindley serves as the setter with 12.70 assists per game. Allyce Wilson records 5.80 digs per game and has 24 aces on the year. Kathleen Stevens also has 24 aces this season.
Sam Atoa is in his ninth season at UVSC. He is 210-89 in his career.
Utah and Utah Valley have met four times, and the Utes have won all four meetings, including wins in 2005 and 2006.
Scouting Wyoming
Wyoming is 10-9 on the season, 4-6 in the MWC. The Cowgirls have won their last two matches, 3-0 over New Mexico on Oct. 18 and 3-1 over TCU on Oct. 19. This is the second meeting between the two squads this year, Utah took a close 3-1 victory on Sept. 29.
Rachel Smith is second in the conference with 4.60 kills per game. Tasha Weishahn has 12.44 assists per game with a .425 hitting percentage. Lauren Scott is averaging 0.92 blocks per game.
Wyoming leads the conference in service aces (1.75 p/g) led by Carissa Lee's 26. Lee is also averaging 4.01 digs per game.
Utah leads the series against Wyoming, 38-23.
Scouting Air Force
Air Force is 7-17 on the season and has dropped its last 10 matches. Utah defeated the Falcons 3-0 on Sept. 28.
Kate Batchelder leads the team with 2.78 kills per game and 2.49 digs per game. She also has 24 aces on the season. Caroline Kurtz is has 2.24 kills per game with 2.37 digs per game. Kim Kallabis leads the team with 7.33 assists per game. Nichole Stilwell has 59 blocks on the season.
Utah is 19-0 versus Air Force.
Against the Best
Colorado State marked the sixth team this season that Utah has played in the top 25 of the AVCA poll. Utah defeated No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and played competitive matches against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Florida and No. 22 New Mexico State, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah. UNLV has received votes in the poll and BYU has also been ranked this season.
Holding Opponents
Utah is second in the MWC in opponent hitting percentage. The Utes are holding opponents to just a .169 hitting percentage. Utah has twice held opponents below .100, holding Dayton (8/31) to .080 and Air Force (9/28) to .008.
Spinning the Webb
Senior Whitney Webb has led Utah in its last five games with 3.86 kills per game and a .244 hitting percentage. She has also tallied 17 blocks. Webb recorded a team-best 19 kills vs. TCU and had a career-high 22 kills vs. BYU.
Middle (Wo)man
Senior Lori Baird has led the Utes since beginning conference play, averaging 1.48 blocks per game, which ranks second in the MWC.
