SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's volleyball team dropped a five-game match to TCU, 3-2, on Saturday, Oct. 6.
With the match tied, 2-2, TCU (16-6, 3-3 MWC) went into game five with the momentum after winning games three and four. The two teams matched each other point-for-point to start the fifth game. Tied 7-7, TCU went on a three point surge to take a 7-10 lead with help from two kills from Kourtney Edwards, and Utah (7-9, 4-3 MWC) never recovered, falling 15-13.
Utah was led by Whitney Webb's 19 kills on .424 hitting, including three blocks. Keisha Fisher had a double-double with 30 assists and 17 digs. Kathryn Haynie had 17 kills and 11 digs, while Lori Baird recorded 14 kills and four blocks.
"The momentum of the match just got away from us," head coach Beth Launiere said. "They came at us aggressively and we weren't able to respond. We need to be more consistent."
The Utes wasted no time taking the lead in game one, quickly pulling away and leading by as many as 10 points in the contest before winning 30-21. Chelsey Sandberg and Karolina Bartkowiak each had four kills in the first game, while Sandberg also had two blocks.
In game two, Utah held as much as an eight point lead, 13-5, before TCU rallied back to pull within two, 17-15. Up 19-17, the Utes went on a 5-0 run for a 24-17 lead with help from a kill and a block from Webb. Utah would take control of the contest from there, winning 30-26.
With Utah leading game three, 22-15, the Horned Frogs went on an 8-1 drive to tie the game, 23-23. Edwards led the charge with three blocks and a kill during the run. TCU would go on to win, 30-26.
In game four, the Utes took a four point lead early, 13-9, but TCU scored six-straight points to take a 15-13 lead. Although Utah would come back to tie the game, 18-18, the Frogs would rally with a four point drive to take the 22-18 lead. Utah would come no closer than two points the rest of the way, falling 30-23.
Other standouts for Utah included Bartkowiak, who had 11 kills, seven digs and a game high five blocks. Stephanie Shardlow recorded 37 assists.
LeMeita Smith led TCU with 17 kills on the night. Edwards tallied 16 kills and 10 blocks, while Irene Hester had 13 kills. Nirelle Hampton came away with 47 assists and 10 digs. Calli Corley had 33 digs for the Frogs.
The Utes return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 against in-state rival Brigham Young at 7 p.m. The match marks the first contest of the Deseret First Dual rivalry series and precedes the Utah Basketball - Friday Night Hoops event at the Huntsman Center.
