SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah forward Kalee Whipple won the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week award after the team's first week play.
Whipple led the Utes in their season-opener against UC Irvine on Nov. 15, scoring a career-high 27 points on 9-of-9 shooting. The Hiko, Nev., product hit three of the team's four three-pointers, going 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the 41-point victory, and powered Utah's 64.0 percent shooting for the game. Whipple also pulled down five boards, dished out three assists and recorded three steals against the Anteaters.
The forward followed up with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting against No. 5 Stanford on Nov. 18, resulting in a double-overtime loss, 81-77. Whipple grabbed a rebound with 11 seconds left on the clock in the first overtime, allowing Utah to get the stop it needed to a hit a running layup with two-tenths of a second left, sending the game into double overtime. She played 41 of 50 minutes against the Cardinals.
For the week, Whipple led the Utes in shooting percentage (.652). She also shot a team-high 80 percent from three-point range and led the team's scoring average at 22.0 points per game.
This marks Whipple's first career Player of the Week honor.
