The Tipoff
The University of Utah women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) leaves the state of Utah for the first time this season when it plays in the Oahu Classic in Oahu, Hawaii, Nov. 22-24. Marist, Akron and Nebraska will play Utah in the three-day, non-conference tournament over the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
The Utes, now receiving votes in the AP poll, enter the tournament on the heels of an 81-77 double-overtime loss to the No. 5/5-ranked Stanford Cardinal. It was the first loss for Utah this season.
Scouting the Opponents
Marist owns a 3-1 record. The Red Foxes rebounded from a 63-57 loss to No. 16/16 Ohio State with wins against Fordham, Stony Brook and Dartmouth. They are led by Rachele Fitz (12.5 point), Meg Dahlman (7.5 rebounds) and Elise Caron (15 assists). Marist, which is receiving votes in both poles, is coached by Brian Giorgis. He is in his sixth season and owns a record of 110-48.
Akron is 1-2 on the season, with losses to Michigan and Cleveland State, and a win over Saint Louis. Keyla Snowden is the top scorer (17.3 points), while Lauren Stephenson (5.7 rebounds) and Sarah Tokodi (seven assists) are also among the team leaders. The Zips are led by Jodi Kest. She has a 10-20 record at Akron and a 237-173 career mark.
Nebraska, also receiving votes in the polls, is a spotless 3-0 this season with wins over UTEP, Mississippi and Florida. The Huskers have three players averaging double-digit points, led by the 19.0 average of Danielle Page. She is also their top rebounder (9.0 rebounds) while Tay Hester has dished out a team-best 10 assists on the year. Connie Yori is in her sixth year on the Husker bench. She is 88-69 at NU and owns a 283-209 career mark.
A Brief Look at the Series
The Oahu Classic features two first-time opponents, and it revives a series that's been dormant since the 1978-79 season. Utah has yet to meet Marist or Akron in its 33-year history. However, its meeting with Nebraska will be the third time these two have battled on the hardwood. Utah owns the all-time series lead with the Huskers, 2-0. The Utes won the initial meeting 71-57 in a 1976 tournament in Greely, Colo. The second meeting was in 1978 in Salt Lake City. The Utes nabbed the 56-52 win that game as well.
The only current MAAC team Utah has faced is Fairfield, and the Utes are 2-0 against it. Akron is only the third Mid-American Conference team Utah has played in its history. It is 2-2 all-time versus the MAC. Utah has played eight of the current Big XII institutions, and it holds a 21-16 record against those teams.
