Scouting Brigham Young
BYU closed out its road season last weekend with wins at TCU and New Mexico. Junior middle blocker Rachel Dyer was named MWC Player of the Week last week. She has 3.31 kills per game with a .425 hitting percentage and 1.30 blocks per game. Chelsea Goodman, who had a rare triple-double against Utah in the last meeting between the two teams, leads the squad with 4.37 kills per game and 30 service aces.
Setter Amy Schlauder is averaging 13.58 assists per game while libero Annie Pinegar has 4.01 digs per game.
In the last meeting between the two teams on Oct. 12, BYU edged Utah in five games, 25-30, 30-24, 30-23, 26-30, 15-7. The Cougars hold the all-time edge, with a 63-21 record. However, Utah has won 15 of the last 20 meetings.
Deseret First Duel
Friday's match marks the second volleyball round of the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. This week's match counts for three points of the 64-point total.
Utah currently leads the rivalry series, 6-3. Although BYU took three points from the last volleyball match, a 1-0 Utah win in soccer for six points allowed the Utes to take the lead.
The rivalry series includes competition in the 12 sports the two universities compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel will use a system that awards points to the winner of each head-to-head competition. A team trophy will be awarded to the individual winner of each sport. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total. At the conclusion of each school year, a granite traveling trophy will be awarded to the overall rivalry series champion.
The Utah vs. BYU rivalry is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. In November 2005, the Wall Street Journal rated the rivalry the fourth best in college athletics.
Against the Best
Colorado State marked the sixth team this season that Utah has played in the AVCA top 25 poll. Utah defeated No. 17 Purdue (3-2) and played competitive matches against No. 4 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Florida and No. 22 New Mexico State, losing several games in each match by just a few points. In addition, the Utes fell to Dayton, 3-2, which moved into the rankings after playing Utah. UNLV moved into the rankings at No. 25 on Nov. 5 and BYU has also been ranked this season.
Holding Opponents
Utah is second in the MWC in opponent hitting percentage. The Utes are holding opponents to just a .171 hitting percentage. Utah has held opponents below .100 three times, holding Dayton (8/31) to .080, Air Force (9/28 and 10/27) to .008 and .071, respectively, and Utah Valley (10/23) to .067.
