SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah women's basketball guard Leilani Mitchell won her second straight Mountain West Conference Player of the Week award this afternoon.
It is also the second such honor of her Utah career.
Mitchell earns the weekly honor after leading the Utes in scoring against South Dakota State and handing out an all-time league-best 18 assists against Fresno State. The Kennewick, Wash., product poured in 16 points on 4-for-9 shooting against South Dakota State and finished 8-for-10 at the line. She then shattered the MWC and arena (Save Mart Center) records with her 18 assists against Fresno State, dishing out 15 assists on 21 first-half field goals and finishing with 18 helpers on 32 field goals made. The guard also shot 6-for-9 in scoring 16 points, recording her first double-double of the season. For the week, Mitchell led the Utes in scoring (16.0 points per game), and shot .556 (10-for-18) from the field. That figure includes a 2-for-5 (.400) mark from three-point range. She was the team leader in free throws made (10-for-12, .833) and had 24 assists with only nine turnovers (2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio).
She shares the award with UNLV's Sequoia Holmes.
Mitchell and the Utes return to action tonight in a road tilt against Southern Cal. Tipoff against the Women of Troy is in the Galen Center and will be at 7 p.m. (PT).
