Utah to Face No. 18/19 Oregon at Pape Jam in Portland
The University of Utah men's basketball team will face off with the nationally-ranked Oregon Ducks Saturday at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore. Tipoff for the Pape Jam is slated for 3 p.m. PST. The game will be televised on ESPN's Full Court pay-per-view package. Live video will be available at www.GoDucks.com. A link to view the live video feed is available on the Ducks' schedule page.
Utah comes into Saturday's game with a 5-2 record, coming off a 72-48, dominating win over Utah State. The Runnin' Utes scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back. Luke Nevill tallied his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 boards, while Kim Tillie scored a career-high 16.
Oregon is ranked No. 19 by the Associated Press and No. 18 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. The Ducks are 6-1 and haven't played since Nov. 29, when they went on the road to defeat Kansas State 80-77 in overtime. Oregon is led by Maarty Leunen, who is averaging 15.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, and Malik Hairston, who scored 17.9 per game. All five Duck starters average in double digits.
Runnin' Ute Fast Breaks
? Three Utah players are averaging double-digit points per game, while four more average 6.6 or more.
? Utah's defensive output of 48 points allowed Wednesday vs. Utah State was its best since beating TCU 80-45 on Jan. 28, 2006.
? Utah has now held three different opponents to 52 points or less this season. The Runnin' Utes did not hold a single 2006-07 opponent to less than 55 points.
? Utah is 129-91 all-time versus current members of the Pacific-10 Conference. The Utes have a .500 record or better against eight of the 10 (USC 14-15; Washington 5-6).
? The Utes currently rank No. 1 in the MWC and No. 4 in the nation (Dec. 2 ranking) in field-goal percentage, converting at a .533 clip.
? Utah has won three consecutive games for the first time since opening the 2005-06 season with a four-game winning streak.
Ute Sharpshooters
Utah is the top shooting team in the Mountain West Conference and one of the best in the nation. The Runnin' Utes have made more than half their field-goal attempts in six of their first seven games. Utah is converting at a .533 clip, which is tops in the league and No. 4 in the nation (as of Dec. 2).
Only one other team in the MWC (New Mexico, .500) is at or above 50 percent. The Utes are also the top 3-point shooting team in the MWC. Utah has hit 54-of-123 from behind the arc, for a percentage of .439.
Hot Hand Luke
Junior center Luke Nevill ranked ninth in the nation in field-goal percentage last season, shooting .637. The 7-foot 1-inch Aussie isn't quite that hot in the early going this season. But he has hit 50 percent or better from the field in six of seven games. His shooting percentage is up to .494 and is recovering from a 2-for-10 outing against Santa Clara. The Preseason All-MWC selection is coming off his best outing of the season, recording season-highs of 20 points and 14 boards. It was his third double-double of the season and his third this season.
Tillie Tickles The Twine
Sophomore forward Kim Tillie had a breakout game Wednesday night against Utah State. The 6-foot 9-inch Frenchman hit every shot he took, going 7-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the 3-point arc. Tillie's 16-point effort was a career-high. After playing in 11 games and missing the second half of last season with a broken foot, Tillie has already improved on last year's mark in every statistical category -- except blocked shots -- in just seven games.
