SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to San Jose State Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium. The Utes were limited to just five hits in the contest.
San Jose State (4-3) did most of its damage in the second inning against Utah starter Chad Cullers. The Spartans put three runs on the board on the strength of two infield hits, a base hit to left field and a Utah error.
SJSU added a single run in the fourth to go on top 4-0. Sonny Garza ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring Marcus McKimmy. The Spartans increased their advantage to 5-0 in the sixth, when Donato Giovanatto led the inning off with a solo home run to left field.
Utah (2-5) finally lit the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Shortstop Corey Shimada laced a one-out triple to right field. He then came around to score when center fielder Nate Burnahm reached on an error. But that's all the offense the Utes could manage against Loren Moneypenny, the San Jose State starting pitcher.
Moneypenny (2-0) tossed eight innings, allowing that one run on five hits. He struck out 11 Utes, while walking just one. Steven Vidal pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game off for SJSU. Cullers (0-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings and suffered the loss for Utah.
Garza was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead San Jose State at the plate. McKimmy and Giovanatto were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Spartans. First baseman Erich Kemp was the only Utah batter with more than one hit. He finished 2-for-4.
Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m. PST Saturday at Municipal Stadium.
