FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah women's basketball team fell behind TCU 17-1 to open Sunday's game at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Utes never fully recovered from the early barrage, falling 74-50 to the Lady Frogs.
TCU (19-7, 9-3 MWC) scored the first eight points of the game, before Utah (16-10, 9-4 MWC) finally lit the scoreboard with a Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) free throw. The Lady Frogs scored nine straight points before Utah scored again, grabbing a 16-point lead just six minutes into the contest.
Utah trailed 32-19 with five minutes remaining in the first half. But the Utes put together a 6-0 spurt, sparked by four points from Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.). That quick run pulled Utah within seven, 32-25. But that's as close as they would get the rest of the way. TCU answered with two straight buckets from Adrianne Ross, who scored a game-high 22 points. By halftime, the Utes' deficit was in double digits again, 36-26.
The Lady Frogs' Helen Roden opened the first half with back-to-back three-pointers. But Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) hit a pair of free throws and a three-pointer, followed by a Warner triple. That 8-0 spurt pulled Utah within eight, 42-34. When Ross scored for TCU to make it 46-36, the Lady Frogs' lead would never shrink below 10 again.
Midway through the second half, Utah was still within 12 after a Shauna Murphy (Sr., Sudbury, Ont.) fallaway jumper made it 54-42. But Utah didn't score again for 5:07 after Murphy's basket. The Utes were 0-for-4 with four turnovers during that span. Meanwhile, TCU scored 15 points in that same period of time. The Lady Frogs' 15-0 run included 4-of-7 shooting from the field, 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, no turnovers and was capped by a Roden three-pointer.
TCU's lead quickly exploded to 27 points, 69-42, before Utah lit the scoreboard again. From there, the Lady Frogs cruised to the 24-point victory.
Ross' 22-point outing was supplemented by a 13-point effort from Ashley Davis and 10 points from Roden for TCU. Hanna Biernacka grabbed eight rebounds for the Lady Frogs. Warner scored a team-high 15 points off the bench for Utah and grabbed a team-high eight boards. Warburton added 13 points for the Utes.
Utah is back in action again Thursday at Air Force. Tipoff in Colorado Springs, Colo. Is slated for 7 p.m.
