SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team led San Jose State 4-0 after seven innings Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. But SJSU scored five runs in the final two innings to pull out a 5-4 win and take the series sweep from the Utes.
Utah (2-7) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Center fielder Nate Burnham led off with a double down the left-field line. Shortstop Corey Shimada followed with an RBI single to left to give Utah a quick edge.
The Utes added two more runs in the second. Catcher Jesse Shriner and Burnham each ripped RBI singles in the frame, putting Utah on top 3-0. Utah went up 4-0 in the seventh. Burnham led off with a single. Right fielder John Welsh plated Burnham with an RBI single up the middle.
Meanwhile, Utah starting pitcher Eric King was rolling along. He held San Jose State (6-3) scoreless for seven innings, allowing just two hits. But King came out of the game for reliever Brett Bruneel in the eighth.
Bruneel was not as effective or as fortunate. He allowed three runs in the eighth, all three unearned after three Utah errors in the frame. But Bruneel still managed to escape the eighth with Utah's lead intact at 4-3.
In the ninth, three straight hits led to two San Jose State runs and the Spartans completed the series sweep with a walk-off victory. Greg Fyfe led off the inning with a triple to center field. The game was tied up at 4-4 on a Corey Valine run-scoring single. One batter later, Chris Balatico doubled down the left-field line, pushing Valine home with the winning run.
Utah out-hit San Jose State 10-7. Burnham was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Third baseman Erich Kemp was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Bruneel (0-1) suffered the loss for Utah. Scott Sobczak (1-0) worked one scoreless inning to pick up the victory for San Jose State.
Utah is in action again Monday, playing a single game at Santa Clara.
