OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Utah's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each improved their standing on day-two of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships on Thursday. The Ute women used a record setting day to move into second-place overall, while the men jumped up one spot to fourth overall.
For the women, it was a day of breaking school and conference records. Amber Walter set a new MWC and Utah school record in the 50 free. Walter's time of 22.51 is an automatic NCAA qualifying time and beat the old MWC Championships record by .27 seconds. Alison McInturff set a new school record and NCAAB provisional qualifying time in the 200 IM. McInturff placed third with a time of 2:03.93. Also the 200 free relay team of Walter, McInturff, Annie VanLeeuwen and Jennifer Fredsall set a new MWC and school record with a time of 1:31.93, their time is an NCAAB qualifying time. Kelsey Patterson placed third in the one-meter diving with a score of 283.70.
The Ute women jumped up one spot from yesterday and now sit second overall with 236 points. BYU is leading the competition with 327 points.
On the men's side, Jeremy Clark and Marco Ferraro placed seventh and eight, respectively in the 500 free. Clark finished in 4:32.66 and Ferraro in 4:33.36. In the 50 free David Maasberg finished eight with a time of 20.95. Andrew Jones placed fifth in the three-meter diving (290.25), while Damien Brown finished seventh (275.05). The Utes sit fourth with 200.5 points trailing BYU by 78.5 points after two of the four days of competition.
"It was a great day of swimming for us," comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "The girls had a record setting day and swam well and the guys also performed well today. We just have to keep chipping away at BYU now; we have two days to go. We look forward to continuing to race hard and set records."
