Hailing from West Valley City, Utah, Van Leeuwen recently graduated from the University of Utah where she swam throughout her college career.
Throughout her years on the Utah swim team, Van Leeuwen broke school records across the board in many freestyle and relay events. In 2007, she was named to the All-MWC team for the 200 and 400 free relays. She was also on the All-MWC team in 2009 for 100 breast, 200, 400, and 800 free relays, and the 400 medley relay. Van Leeuwen was listed as an MWC Scholar athlete during her junior and senior years.
