Recap | Final Stats | Notes
Utah Guard Johnnie Bryant
"We played defense. We knew Brandon Heath was going to try to get it going and get a few shots, but the biggest thing we were worried about was stopping his major runs. We did a good job limiting his runs and we limited Mohamed Abukar's touches. He hit a couple of crucial shots, but we got stops down the stretch and made free-throws. Tonight, the focal point tonight was just playing hard and giving a good effort for Ricky [Johns]."
Utah Guard Ricky Johns
"It's a great feeling. Coach talked to me about confidence and wanted me to be as aggressive as possible, and get extra shots up and just feel the rhythm and be confident. I put in the hard work, and it pays off. The ball felt really good tonight. When it came out of my hand, the release was fine and my stroke felt good. I think I surprised them [San Diego State]. They definitely didn't think I was going to get 30 on them, because that's way above my average. My teammates were looking for me. They knew it was my last game here, so they wanted me to go out well."
Utah Head Coach Ray Giacoletti
"I am just so happy and proud of Ricky. He is the most loyal guy on our team, even when he got himself a little bit into the dog house his first year here. I was hard on him, but there was nobody that came to practice any harder; he was a good teammate. For him to do this on senior night, with a bit of pressure on him with his mom and sister being here. "It was his last opportunity, and I couldn't be more proud of him."
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
"We had so many chances tonight. The first half we squandered scoring opportunities with turnovers, and it looked like four or five times we were going to be on breaks to get lay-ups and we threw the ball away, missed a couple easy shots; and towards the very last play of the half when it looked like we should have held for the last shot we shot too early and they got one at the buzzer. Ricky Johns had a senior night to remember, and finally we said let's see if we can keep him under one hundred, and he didn't do too much down the stretch but the damage had been done. We got handed one where we had a chance to win but we couldn't quite pull the trigger."
