2
Big Second Inning Leads New Mexico State Over Utes

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team saw New Mexico State erupt for 12 runs in the second inning Friday afternoon at Presley Askew Field. That big inning led the Aggies to a 16-5 victory over the Utes.
New Mexico State grabbed a 2-0 lead off Utah starter Chad Cullers in the bottom of the first inning. The Aggies' Joseph Scaperotta began an amazing performance in the first with an RBI triple down the left-field line.
Scaperotta and the Aggies blew things open in the second inning, however. New Mexico State tallied 12 runs on eight hits, six walks, a Utah error and a hit batsman. Scaperotta did most of the damage. He ripped a two-run double and later smacked a grand slam, giving him two hits and six RBIs in the second inning alone. By the end of the inning, Cullers had been knocked out of the game, reliever Andrew Wilding lasted one third of an inning and Bennett Askew finally finished off the frame.
With New Mexico State leading 14-0, Utah finally got on the scoreboard in the third on a Jay Brossman sacrifice fly. The Aggies upped their advantage to 16-1 in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs. Brossman drove in a second run with an infield hit in the fifth, making it 16-2.
The Utes added three more in the top of the sixth. Erich Kemp notched an RBI single, while Nate Burnham added a sacrifice fly. Kemp later scored on an error to make it 16-5 and account for the final score. Neither team pushed a run across in the final three innings.
Scaperotta finished 5-for-5 for New Mexico State, scoring four times and driving in seven runs. Brian Gausman (2-0) tossed six innings, allowing all five Utah runs.
Cullers (0-2) suffered the loss for Utah. He allowed five earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. Wilding gave up seven runs (three earned) in one-third of an inning. Kemp led the way at the plate for the Utes. He was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Game two of the three-game set is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday.
