SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team jumped out to an early lead over the University of Portland Saturday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Utes rode that early momentum to a 7-5 victory over the Pilots, evening their three-game series.
Utah (5-14) drew first blood, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Utes ran two perfectly-executed double steals in the inning, stealing home twice for a pair of runs. Center fielder Nate Burnham and right fielder John Welsh each scored by swiping home. In between those two runs, first baseman Jay Brossman scored on an RBI single from Welsh.
Portland got a single run back in the bottom of the inning off Utah starter Eric King. The Utes pushed their advantage to 4-1 in the third, when catcher Cody Guymon doubled home designated hitter Fred Ferguson. Brossman doubled to push second baseman Corey Shimada across in the fourth to make it 5-1. Utah went up 6-1 in the top of the seventh, when Guymon singled to drive in a run.
Ute reliever Stephen Fife took over for King in the bottom of the seventh. Portland quickly got to Fife for two runs on one hit, one error, a pair of walks and a passed ball. The two-run seventh pulled the Pilots back within three runs, 6-3. Portland added another single tally in the eighth to get within two, 6-4.
Utah got an insurance run in the ninth to go up 7-4. Guymon laced his second double of the day and later scored when third baseman Erich Kemp singled up the middle.
Portland used an error and a pair of hits to score a run in the ninth against Utah closer Brett Bruneel. But with the bases loaded and two outs, Bruneel coaxed the Pilots' Justin Pierce into a fly ball to left field, preserving Utah's two-run victory.
Guymon paced the Utah offense, going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Ferguson also scored two runs for the Utes. King (2-1) allowed one unearned run on five hits in six innings to pick up the victory. He struck out five and allowed one base on balls. Bruneel picked up his first save, going 1 1/3 innings and allowing a single unearned run. Ari Ronick (2-2) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings, taking the loss for Portland.
The rubber game of the three-game set is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. PDT.
