Utes Fall to UNLV 7-0 on a Freaky Friday

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The University of Utah women's tennis team played a rough match against UNLV (60) for a 7-0 loss on freaky Friday.

The Rebels were strong from start to finish as they faced the Utes. In doubles play, the Utes fought hard, but were unable to pull out any wins. Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh were defeated 8-5 by Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva (16) at the No. 1 slot. Cheyenne Reveche and Emily Kwok fell to Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfelde from the Rebels 8-4 at the No. 2 slot. Finishing out doubles play, Karine Bourdages and Andrea Maughan were defeated 8-7 by Clair Smith and Alisa Razina at the No. 3 slot.

The Utes weren't in their usual groove in singles play on Friday as they faced the Rebels. Jessica Carter finished up first at the No. 6 slot. The Ute face Alisa Razina from UNLV for a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Kwok finished up next at the No. 2 slot. She faced Kristina Nedeltcheva from the Rebels for a 6-3, 6-1 loss.

Ferris played at the top spot against No. 57 Elena Gantcheva from the Rebels. Although going undefeated until this point, the Rebel ended Ferris' 18-match winning streak on Friday. The Ute fell 6-2, 6-3 to Gantcheva; Ferris' record is now 18-1 for the season.

At the No. 5 slot, Bourdages faced Claire Smith from the Rebels. Smith shut down the Ute 6-4, 6-1 to edge the Rebels to 5-0. At the No. 3 slot, Maughan battled Nikol Dimitrova from UNLV. The Rebel overcame the Ute for a 6-1, 6-4 victory in Dimitrova's favor. Finishing out singles play on Friday, Reveche faced Linda Tempelfelde at the No. 4 slot. Reveche slammed a perfect 6-0 win in the first set. The Ute almost took the second set, but wasn't able to seal the deal in the end. Tempelfelde took the second set 7-6. In the tie-breaker, the two went point-for-point right to the end. The Rebel ended up taking the win with a match score of 0-6, 7-6, 11-9.

The Utes are now 3-4 in conference play. The team will take on No. 56 San Diego State on Saturday.
