LAS VEGAS, Nev. - After playing to a 1-0 loss in their previous game, the fourth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (29-29) scored in abundance in an elimination game Wednesday night against the third-seeded Utah Utes (24-31). The Aztecs eliminated the Utes from the Mountain West Conference Tournament with their 12-1 win at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
San Diego State got on the board in the second inning with three runs on five hits off of Utah's Eric King. The Aztecs opened the frame with back-to-back singles by Brandon Glover and Brian Lucas. Garett Green advanced the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, while Matt Parker plated both with a two-run single up the middle. Pat Colwell collected the fourth single of the inning, as he moved Parker into scoring position. Parker wound up scoring on a single by Joe Spiers.
The quick lead was all that Steven Hirschfeld needed to notch his fifth win of the season, as he improved to 5-4 on the year. Hirschfeld allowed only one run on five hits. He lost his bid for a shutout when he threw a wild pitch to allow Utah's only run of the game.
The Aztecs increased its lead to 4-0 on a ground out by Lucas in the third. Frank Lonigro scored the run after smashing a triple to center to open up the inning.
SDSU pushed its margin to 5-0 in the fourth on a single by Nick Romero. Colwell began the inning with a single and made his way around the base paths following a ground out, a wild pitch and Romero's single. Prior to Romero's single, Utah brought in Kerr Foster in relief of King.
After going scoreless in the fifth, the Aztecs moved their lead to six runs with help from an errant throw by Utah's Jesse Shriner on a steal attempt. Colwell began the inning with a double to right-center and scored the sixth run of the game. Colwell took third on a ground out and scored when Shriner's throw sailed into center following Speirs steal of second.
In the seventh, a sacrifice fly put in play by Lucas brought Lonigro home for a 7-0. Lonigro began the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Glover.
The Aztecs added five runs in the ninth on four hits. Parker brought home the first run on a double, while Troy Hanzawa scored a couple with a two-run single. Two more scored on a single by Romero.
King suffered the loss for Utah and dropped to 6-3 to end the year. He was responsible for five runs on 10 hits, while striking out five.
With the win, SDSU advances to a 7:00 pm PT elimination game with the loser of the fifth-seeded New Mexico Lobos and second-seeded BYU Cougars game, which will take place at 11:00 am.
