SALT LAKE CITY - Two Andrew Walker home runs lifted TCU to a 3-1 victory over the University of Utah in Mountain West Conference action Sunday at Franklin Covey Field.
Utah right-hander Lucas Trinnaman had his best outing of the season and the longest of any Ute pitcher this year. The Alpine, Utah native allowed just a solo home run to Walker in the top of the fifth in eight innings of work. Walker's shot to center field gave TCU (37-11, 18-2 MWC) a 1-0 advantage.
Utah (21-25, 9-9 MWC) got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Ute second baseman Corey Shimada recorded the first hit against Horned Frog starter Chance Corgan - a single off the left-field wall. Shimada moved to second on a balk and third on a wild pitch. First baseman Jay Brossman then singled up the middle to push Shimada across the plate and knot things up at 1-1.
Neither team scored through the remainder of regulation play. Trinnaman retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced after Walker's home run. Brett Bruneel came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for Utah. Corgan, Tyler Lockwood and reliever Sam Demel kept Utah scoreless through the ninth.
Demel had a scary moment in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Utah catcher Jesse Shriner lined a Demel delivery back up the middle. The ball hit Demel on the shoulder, ricocheted off his head and ended up in right field. After a short delay, Demel stayed in the game and got Erich Kemp to line into a double play ending the inning. Demel went to a local hospital for observation following the ninth inning.
In the top of the 10th, TCU got a leadoff single from Clint Arnold, who then stole second. One batter later, Walker sent a Bruneel offering just over the left-field wall for a two-run homer and a 3-1 Horned Frog advantage. Chad Cullers came out of the Utah bullpen to end the inning with no more damage. But the Ute offense went down in order against Taylor Cragin in the bottom of the frame.
Demel picked up the victory fot TCU, improving to 6-1. Cragin picked up his first save for the Horned Frogs. Bruneel suffered the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season.
Utah managed just three hits in the contest. TCU mustered nine, with Walker doing all the real damage. He was 2-for-3 with the two home runs, two runs scored and all three RBIs.
Utah will be in action again Tuesday night at Utah Valley State. First pitch in Orem, Utah is slated for 7 p.m.
