This Week: The track and field season starts to reach its apex as the University of Utah track and field team heads to San Diego for the Mountain West Conference Championship Meet. It is a three-day event that goes from Thursday, May 9, to Saturday, May 12, at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Live scoring is available at the Mountain West Conference Web site, www.themwc.com, with daily recaps highlighting Utah's performances available at Utah's official Web site, www.utahutes.com.
Quoting Coach Kyle Kepler:
On the Mountain West Conference Championships: "Our goal is for each student-athlete to improve her position on the Mountain West Conference performance list. That is our team's No. 1 priority. Certainly we want to do well in the team standings, but this is the time of the year where you want each athlete to perform her best in terms of season and career PR's. If we accomplish that, then we know that the University of Utah track and field program is heading in the right direction."
On the Weber State Twilight: "We had a nice meet. The women competed hard and used this meet as one final chance to tie up any loose ends in their events before we go to the conference meet. We'll start to back things down and get rested for the conference championships next week."
Notes - Utah saw four student-athletes record PR's in three events at the Weber State Twilight last week. Those were Amanda Feigt in the 100m hurdles (14.13), Ashley Patterson (38-9 1/2) and Mandie Rowell (38-4 3/4) in the triple jump, and Chastity Toilolo in the shot put (42-10) ... entering the championship meet, Utah has 14 performances (including two relay times) that rank in the conference's top 10. Among the team's top performers in the conference are: Amanda Feigt in the 400m hurdles (fourth, 59.61); the 4x400 relay team (fourth, 3:44.71); Lauren Endersen in the 10,000m (fifth, 36:40.43); Becky Riddle in the hammer (fifth, 172-6); Feigt in the long jump (sixth, 19-8 ¼); Jennifer Cutrer in the 100m hurdles (seventh, 14.12); the 4x100 relay team (eighth, 46.67); Susan Atwater in the pole vault (ninth, 12-5 ½); and Ashley Patterson in the triple jump (10th, 38-9 ½) ... last year at the outdoor conference championships, Amanda Feigt competed in five events, chalking up a team-high 18.75 points. This year, Feigt will have the chance to equal that effort, competing in another five events. Feigt is slated to compete in the heptathlon, the 100m hurdles, the 400m hurdles, the long jump and 4x400 relay ... last year's team finished sixth at the outdoor championships, racking up 65 points.
