SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Both University of Utah track and field athletes competed here on the second day of the NCAA Championships as Amanda Feigt and Chelsea Shapard went up against some of the best collegiate athletes the nation had to offer.
Feigt got it started in the heptathlon. She is in 23rd place after the first day with 3041 points. The leader, Gaelle Niare of Southern Methodist, chalked up 3690 points.
Feigt's best effort came in the 100m hurdles, where her time of 15.30 netted her 931 points. Her other efforts included a 5-3 leap in the high jump (736 points), a 33-9 1/4 toss in the shot put (548), and a time of 25.67 in the 200m (826). The second part of the heptathlon (long jump, javelin and 800m) starts tomorrow at 11:30 am (PDT).
"Amanda had an average day in the multi-event," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "She struggled with an illness last week and looked a little rusty today. But, she fought through it and did the best she could. Two of her best events are tomorrow and we expect her to come back and improve her standing on the second day."
Shapard and Feigt added a Crimson and White flavor to the 400m hurdles prelims later on in the afternoon. Shapard recorded the best time between the two Utes, crossing the finish line in 59.49. Feigt tallied a 1:03.10. They finished 18th and 27th, respectively. The did not qualify for Friday's semifinal.
"In the 400m hurdles, Amanda had about an hour's rest after the heptathlon," continued Kepler. "She ran well for about the first 250m but she got tired having just finished the first four events of the heptathlon. Hopefully, she has a good night's rest and comes back tomorrow rested and ready to compete.
"Shapard came into today's event a little dinged up and only had a few practices. This wasn't her best race but she gave it her best effort and had a great experience here. This will be a great learning curve for her and we hope she comes back and uses this experience to better herself."
