PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's tennis team took Cougar Town by storm on Saturday at the BYU Invitational. The Utes won two of the three contests- Flight B Singles and Flight A Doubles. Karine Bourdages reined champion in singles, while Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh took the doubles competition.
Bourdages faced Andrea Maughan in the finals for a battle of Ute capacity. It was a close match, but it was Bourdages that closed the gap to end the match 7-5, 6-2 over Maughan.
In doubles play, Utah's Ferris and Walsh faced Christina Doerr and Elle Carney from BYU in the semifinals. The duos went point for point, challenging each other's abilities. The battle royal ended with the Utes pulling ahead for a 9-7 win over the Cougar duo. In the finals, Ferris and Walsh met Jocelyn Jensen and Dolly Chang from BYU. The Utes stepped up to take the Cougars 8-4 on their home court for a glorious win of the doubles contest.
Elizabeth Ferris played in the Flight A finals on Saturday. She faced Doerr from the Cougar's squad. Doerr took the first set 6-2, but Ferris stepped up her game to match it in the second set for a 6-2 win. The two played hard into the third set, however, the decision was made by Doerr. The Cougar took the set and match at 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 over Ferris.
"It was good for us to win two of the three events in this tournament," states head coach Mat Iandolo. "We learned a lot about our team this weekend and saw a lot of good things. The girls played hard and gave me a good idea of where we will go from here."
"Although Liz wasn't able to pull out a win, I think that this tournament was good for her. It was good for her to work out all of the rust in preparation for the All-American Tournament coming up."
