THIS WEEK:
The Utah swimming and diving team will have two meets this weekend on the road. On Friday, January 25, they will face Wyoming at 5:00 p.m., in Laramie, Wyo. The following day the team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to swim against Air Force at 1:00 p.m. Both the men and women will be in action as the conference schedule nears its end. The Ute women are 5-3 overall with a 4-1 record in the Mountain West Conference, while the men are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference thus far.
UTE NOTES:
The Ute women are nearing the end of a stretch in which they have five conference meets in 19 days concluding with BYU on its new date, Thursday, January 31, in Provo, Utah. Utah will need to swim strong in both the fly and sprint events against Wyoming. Those two events could be the ones that could swing the outcome. Against Air Force the Ute athletes will be swimming different events than they are used to in order to see how they do outside of their normal comfort zone.
Utah's women beat both Wyoming and Air Force last season as they went unbeaten in dual meets through the regular season.
The men return to action after a week off from competition and are ready for three meets in eight days to conclude the conference schedule. Both teams will be difficult challenges as the Utes try for their first two wins of the season. For the Utes to beat Wyoming they must perform well in the distance events and look to get points on close touches. Against Air Force Utah will be need to show its depth and swim well even on short rest.
Last season the men beat Wyoming 137-103 and Air Force 154-146 in back-to-back meets in Salt Lake City.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Wyoming - The Cowboys won their only conference meet thus far, making them 1-0. They are one of the best in the conference in the breast events and as always, Wyoming is very well coached.
The Cowgirls sit at 3-2 in MWC competition. In addition to a talented group of breast swimmers, they are very strong in the distance free events as well. Wyoming is one of the most difficult places for opponents to swim at in the MWC.
Air Force - The Falcon men are very deep and probably the best all-around team in the conference. They are 0-2 in conference thus far, but have solid athletes and should prove to be a tough opponent for the Utes. The women are 0-5 in the MWC, but will have the home advantage. Air Force is always one of the most disciplined teams in the conference and very well coached.
ON DECK WITH HEAD COACH Greg Winslow:
"I'm happy with where we're at right now as a team. We are coming along well in the maturing process and it will be good for us to deal with the adversity of two meets in two days. I'm looking forward to seeing how we handle that adversity this weekend."
