Utes Knock Off No. 43 Oregon 5-2

EUGENE, ORE. - The University of Utah women's tennis team knocked off a big win on Friday against the No. 43 Oregon Ducks. The Utes slammed a well deserved 5-2 victory over a top 50 program for the first time since February 2001 when the Utes defeated No. 50 UC Irvine (5-2).

The Utes started off strong earning the doubles point over the Ducks. Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok teamed up at the top spot on Friday to face Ana Cecilia Olivos and Celine Rolly for an 8-6 win. Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh took on Carmen Seremeta and Stephanie McFarlane at the No. 2 spot for an 8-5 win.

In singles play, the Utes were almost unstoppable. At the top slot, Ferris took on Rolly from the Duck's squad for a three-set battle. The Ute played over the Duck for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win. Kryuchkova settled in at the No. 2 slot for the Utes. Facing Seremeta from the Ducks, Kryuchkova slammed a powerful 6-3, 6-4 win to advance the Utes to 3-0.

Erin Monson took on Olivos at the No. 3 spot for a three-set battle. Monson took the first set at 6-2, but couldn't hold the Duck in the second set. In the last set, the Ute dug deep to take the set and match at 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Finishing out the day for Utah was Karine Bourdages. The Ute faced Siobhan Cavan from the Ducks at the No. 6 slot. Although falling in the first set, the Ute came back ready to brawl for the rest of the match. The two battled hard back and forth, but it was the Ute that came out on top with a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 win.

"This is the first time the women's tennis program has defeated a top 50 program in a long time," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "To beat a solid team like Oregon on the road really shows the progress that our program is making."

The Utes will be back in action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday to face Cal Poly in Eugene, Ore.
