THIS WEEK:
Utah's swimming and diving team will conclude the regular season on Thursday, January 31, in Provo, Utah, against in-state rival BYU. The meet will be held on the campus of Brigham Young University at 6:00 p.m. The Utes enter the meet with a 6-4 women's record (5-2 in MWC) and a 0-6 record on the men's side (0-4 in MWC).
UTE NOTES:
The Utes will look to close out the regular season strong versus the Cougars. Thursday will mark the first meeting for head coach Greg Winslow against BYU and will also be the first look for the freshmen at the most heated rivalry in the conference.
Utah's women are coming off a win to Air Force to earn their fifth conference victory of the season. The match-up with BYU will be important for Utah not only in the rivalry sense but also it is key preparation for the Mountain West Conference Championships beginning February 27.
Look for the Utes to swim their best line-up in each event in order to get one last look at the athletes before making decisions on which events each will swim at the conference championships.
The Ute women will lean on Shannon McQueen, Jennifer Fredsall and Natalie Edge to lead them against the Cougars. This will be the last dual meet for the seniors and the team will need each athlete to step up in order to finish the regular season strong and gain momentum going into the postseason.
On the men's side, Utah has the opportunity to make a statement against the top team in the conference. The Utes are one of the best sprint freestyle teams in the conference and also are strong in the 200 free. This meet gives the Ute freshmen a chance to step up. After struggling in the first half of their last several meets, look for the focus to be on starting strong and not creating an early deficit.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
BYU - The Cougars enter the meet unbeaten in conference competition this season on both the men's and women's front. The BYU men are ranked 23rd in the nation according to collegeswimming.com and boast what seems to be the most talented and deep team in the conference.
The BYU women are at the top of the conference this season and boast talented seniors as well as freshmen that have been able to contribute immediately, including Aleesha Miller and Rachel Grant. The Cougars will be looking to avenge a defeat at the hands of the Utes last season.
ON DECK WITH HEAD COACH Greg Winslow:
"I'm excited to be a part of this rivalry between BYU and Utah. We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete against the best team in the conference and really get a measure for where we are at heading into the conference championships."
